Chandra Shekhar Azad, a daring freedom fighter and fearless revolutionary was born on 23 July 1906, in a village called Bhavra, in Madha Pradesh. His parents were Pandit Sitaram Tiwari and Jagarani Devi.
After finishing his primary education he went to Benaras to study Sanskrit.At a very young age he got involved in revolutionary activities and joined Mahamatma Gandhi’s non-coperation movement. He was arrested while indulging in revolutionary activities. When the magistrate asked him his name, he said “Azad” .Chandra Shekhar Azad was sentenced to fifteen lashes. With each whip, young Chandra Shekhar shouted “Bhrat Mata Ki Jai”. He was just Fifteen then. With this incident Chandra Shekhar assumed the title of “Azad” and came to be known as Chandra Shekhar Azad and vowed that he would never be arrested by British and will die a free man.
He was deeply troubled by Jalianwala Bagh massacre, and after non-cooperation movement was called off by Gandhiji, He turned extremist and had a burning desire for complete independence by any means. He believed it was his dharma to fight for the freedom his Motherland. He also believed that soldier never relinquishes his weapon. He was the first Indian revolutionary to use arms in his fight for independence against the British, after the 1857 Indian Rebellion by Mangal Pandey. He became the mentor for other revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.
