Champions of Hinduism: Subhash Chandra Bose
Subhash Chandra Bose (1897 - 1945)
Affectionately known as “Netaji,” this fearless defender of Hindustaan was born to a prominent lawyer. He graduated with a first class degree in Philosophy, and went to England to study Indian Civil Service.
Influenced by Swami Vivekanand’s teachings, he was well-known for his staunch patriotism. Deeply disturbed by Jalianwala Bagh massacre, he abandoned his studies and returned to India. He joined Indian National Congress, under Mahatma Gandhi. Bose was outspoken in his anti-British stance and was jailed multiple times. Bose advocated complete freedom for India. Inability of Congress to save Bhagat Singh’s life infuriated Bose. He was elected Congress president twice, second time defeating Gandhiji’s nominee. His rigid stand was opposed and he resigned as president following ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi, to form progressive group known as Forward Block.
Everything changed when the war broke out in 1939. He moved to Singapore thereafter and formed the "Azad Hind Fauj" or the "Indian National Army" which consisted of 40,000 Indians, mainly prisoners of war. This determined army under Netaji's leadership freed Andaman and Nicobar islands from the British, and were welcomed as liberating heroes when they marched through Burma freeing an Indian border town.
Bose was in Singapore and boarded a flight to Tokyo to plan the next course of action. Unfortunately he was "declared dead" on 18th August 1945 in plane crash over Taiwan under suspicious circumstances.
Netaji was one of the most prominent and highly respected leaders of Indian Independence movement. His fiery leadership quality, his burning desire to free the Motherland, his sense of patriotism without fanaticism, has made him a living legend.
Subhashji deserves every Hindu's eternal gratitude for everything he stood for, and will live eternally in the hearts of every Hindu as a fiery Hindu tiger who would not lay down and play dead or allow Hindustaan to be enslaved.
