Champions of Hinduism: Sukhdev Thapar

SukhdevThapar

Sukhdev Thapar (1907 - 1931)

This defender of Hindustaan was a native of Punjab, and was a famous Indian revolutionary full of patriotism and self-sacrifice. He was man of deep rooted principles and tremendous courage, and played a major part in struggle for independence. He is considered to be one of the great freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their motherland. He will be remembered for his daring and courageous attacks in the Lahore conspiracy case that shook thefoundation of British. Sukhddev took part, along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, in assassination of Deputy Superintendent J P Saunders, in 1928, to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, who died as a result of severe police beating during protest march.

As a youth he had witnessed the atrocities committed by British. He joined revolutionary movement with a vow to free India from the brutal British Imperialism. He was a member of the Hindustan Social Republican Association, and organized revolutionary units, mainly in Punjab. After the central Assembly Hall bombings in New Delhi on 8th April, 1929, Sukhdev. Bhagat Singh and Rajguru were arrested, and convicted of their crime and sentenced to death in sham proceedings which they were not allowed to participate in. The alleged traitor named Hansraj Vohra gave the testimony which resulted into their conviction.

On 23rd March Sukhhdev along with Bhgat Singh and Rajguru were hanged and their bodies were secretly creameted on banks of river Saatlaj. He will always be remembered as the most courageous, and patriotic son of India, who sacrificed his life for the struggle of India’s independence.

Thus another most beloved son of India, a true patriotic revolutionary and a staunch defender for Hindustaan, became a martyr at the tender age of 24.
